Learning & EarningHCC secured a SNAP-Ed grant to fund an innovative after-school program where 10 Silver Stage High School students earn $15.50 an hour to learn—and teach—gardening skills. These students received workplace training and are now leading middle schoolers in the Boys & Girls Club after-school program at SSMS. Together, they’ve already set up hydroponics systems and planted seedlings, learning firsthand about sustainable food production. But the impact doesn’t stop there! These high school mentors will also be guiding students at Silver Stage Elementary and their own peers at SSHS during the school day, expanding hydroponics education and outdoor gardening lessons across the entire Silver Stage school community. This program beautifully integrates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), Career & Technical Education (CTE), and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), all within an innovative peer-to-peer model. |

Cutting WasteAnd that’s not all—Ms. Leach and her students have also transformed lunchtime waste management. Through composting efforts, SSMS has reduced cafeteria trash to just ONE bag per day! This initiative not only minimizes waste but also enriches the garden’s soil, reinforcing lessons on sustainability and environmental responsibility. |

Lyon County School District is proud to spotlight Trey Lundeen, a dedicated student-athlete from Dayton High School, who has been selected as the new NIAA Western Representative. Dayton High School Student Trey Lundeen Named NIAA Western Representative!
Lyon County School District is proud to spotlight Trey Lundeen, a dedicated student-athlete from Dayton High School, who has been selected as the new NIAA Western Representative. Trey’s journey to this leadership position is a testament to his passion for sports, commitment to leadership, and dedication to representing his peers.
A Passion for Athletics
From an early age, Trey was drawn to athletics, inspired by strong leaders in the sports community. His wrestling career began at just six years old, following in the footsteps of his father, a competitive wrestler. After training with a club team, his family started their own wrestling program, where Trey continued to hone his skills. By eighth grade, his hard work paid off when he secured a state title.
In addition to wrestling, Trey expanded his athletic pursuits by joining the Dayton Pop Warner football team. Although he didn’t start as the strongest player, his dedication to teamwork and sportsmanship quickly set him apart. Throughout high school, he remained a multi-sport athlete, competing in football, wrestling, track, and men’s volleyball.
Discovering a Passion for Leadership
Trey’s leadership journey began when his leadership teacher encouraged him to attend the Leadership State event in Sparks, NV. This experience sparked a newfound enthusiasm for student leadership, inspiring him to pursue opportunities to make a difference.
Although he was initially too young to apply for a representative position, Trey remained determined. The following year, he took on the challenge of running for two leadership positions, ultimately earning the esteemed title of NIAA Western Representative.
The Road to Becoming an NIAA Representative
The selection process for the NIAA Western Representative was rigorous. Trey completed an extensive application, which included contracts, release forms, letters of endorsement from school officials, a resume, and responses to key questions about sportsmanship and leadership in student-athletics. After a competitive Zoom interview with NIAA Representatives from the South and North regions, he received the official selection email on March 4, 2025.
What’s Next for Trey?
As the NIAA Western Representative, Trey will take on numerous responsibilities, including:
- Attending the NFHS Leadership Conference (July 14-17)
- Participating in NIAA Board of Control meetings
- Representing student-athletes at NASC events
- Overseeing a leadership, sportsmanship, and positive spirit campaign
- Managing an NIAA Liaison Blog to provide updates on Board of Control matters
While these duties may seem demanding, Trey is eager to embrace the challenge and make a meaningful impact on the student-athlete community.
Inspiring Others to Lead
Trey credits his motivation to Mia Sioposs, the current Western Representative for STCUO, whose leadership inspired him to step forward and represent his community. He is particularly passionate about shining a light on Dayton’s sports and extracurricular activities.
In addition to his NIAA role, Trey is also running for the STUCO Western Representative position, with election results set to be announced on March 20th. No matter the outcome, he remains committed to empowering student-athletes and fostering a positive, inclusive sports culture.
Congratulations, Trey! You encompass the LCSD Portrait of a Learner! We are incredibly proud of your achievements and look forward to seeing the positive impact you will make as the NIAA Western Representative.
